The first Queen Elisabeth Competition for cello is the perfect occasion to turn our attention to the Belgian cello history. In Flagey, the expo ‘The Belgian School of Cello Playing’ runs from 10-20 May 2017.

Since the nineteenth century, Belgium has produced many cellists that have made themselves heard worldwide. The most famous one is François Servais, the ‘Paganini of the Cello’, whose compositions can still be heard all over the world. But there are many other cellists who have also helped shape what came to be known as the ‘Belgian School of Cello Playing’.

The initial part of the exhibition is dedicated to nine generations of Belgian cellists. Discover a treasure of not previously exhibited scores, photos, letters, programmes and recordings from the Halle Servais Collection! The second part presents Eric Feldbusch (1922-2007), who, as a virtuoso cellist, composer, conductor and director, left his mark on Belgian musical life in the 20th century.

The expo can be visited free of charge in the Flagey Foyer 3 daily (except on Sunday) from 2pm until 10pm. Guided visits are available upon previous request.

The book ‘The Belgian School of Cello Playing’ by Peter François is available at the expo.

A joint organization of the Servais Society and the Eric Feldbusch Foundation, with the cooperation of EKHO, Queen Elisabeth Competition and Flagey. Part of EKHO#2 (www.ekho-violins.com).
