During the quiet corona period in 2020, Joris Wouters built a brand new cello. On a label on the inside of the instrument he wrote: ‘This instrument is meant to make the world sound better ….’. Wouters is donating this instrument to society ‘for a better world’.
On February 18, 2021, the instrument will be sold at an action, together with various other art pieces and concerts.
Cello for Charity wants use the proceeds to offer their support and aid mostly classical musicians that greatly suffer from this crisis. They don’t need charity, but support in their profession as independent musicians. Charity, or solidarity, we do ask from those who have not been greatly affected by this crisis.
It is with full conviction that I support the initiative Cello for Charity.
Newly-built instruments are a more than adequate alternative for highly expensive, old Italian ones.
All my CDs for the Harmonia Mundi – label were recorded playing a now 28 year old instrument. When Joris Wouters told me he wanted to donate a cello to Cello for Charity, I didn’t hesitate for a second to join the project. After all, Joris Wouters is one of the best luthiers that I have ever met worldwide.

To divide the proceeds, this project partners with ArtistsUnited vzw, the only organization in this industry who focuses on classical musicians. A smaller part will go to a music school in Mosoul (Irak), through journalist Rudi Vranckx.
